In May 2021, a balcony collapsed at a beachfront home in Malibu, California, injuring nine people. The incident occurred during a birthday party on Saturday afternoon. Witnesses described the collapse as a "freak accident" caused by a combination of the deck's structural integrity and the weight of too many people.
In June 2015, six students died in a balcony collapse during a party in Berkeley, California. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning, and at least seven others were injured. The balcony, on the fourth floor of the Library Gardens Apartments, appeared to have torn away from the building.
